Ministry History About Dr. CJ Matthews

Church History

Mount Sinai Baptist Church was a ministry born in 1927 prior to the Great Depression. Our first pastor, the Reverend David W. Hill, was a man of great compassion. He provided vital services such as housing, transportation, job opportunities, and a variety of services to people in need during a challenging time of our history. He made life easier for members of his congregation and their friends.

After 24 years of pastoral service, Pastor D. W. Hill was succeeded by his son. The Reverend Luther F. Hill Sr. became our second pastor and continued the work of his father. Pastor L. F. Hill was a well renowned preacher and community leader. He established the Mount Sinai Baptist Church Credit Union and was instrumental in the development of the East Woodland Estates and Community Apartments. He also led our congregation in the development of our current facility that we have occupied since 1969.

Pastor L. F. Hill was an unselfish visionary leader before his time. He passed the baton on to Pastor C. Jay Matthews in January 1988. This rich and wonderful history and gives us the advantage of continuity and synergy and are the key components of our current success. For more than a decade, God has given vision, provision and dedicated people to this ministry who help create the things that are described on this webpage.

Mount Sinai is a community ministry. It is our belief that God wants the church to be the catalyst for change in the community. We have seen what a committed congregation can do with the power of an ever-present God who has poured out His Spirit on our ministry in a mighty way. It is interesting, many people wonder about our anointing because we are a Baptist congregation. God is no respecter of denomination. He will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh according to Joel 2. God has chosen to give Mount Sinai a fresh anointing for healing, deliverance, and restoration.

The stained glass window is the focal point of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church main Sanctuary. Although contemporary in design, the window follows traditional lead and glass concepts handed down from the middle ages. The pieces are joined together with lead of different widths. The different lead widths serve to emphasize various design movements and color areas. The window was designed as an original work of art especially for Mount Sinai Baptist Church, never to be duplicated.

The colors in the window has been used in an allegorical manner to illustrate basic theological concepts.

  • Blue symbolizes truth and the universality of Christ's teaching.
  • Red is the color of God's love and of zeal.
  • Green is for the trinity season and also life, hope, and growth.
  • Gold is the color of goodness and glory
  • Violet has been used for penance and repentance as well as for the humble circumstances of Christ's birth
  • Browns and grays symbolize the hope and aspirations of the Black race.

The theme of One Lord, One Faith, and One Baptism is illustrated by symbols that are woven into the color areas of the window. “One Lord” is illustrated by the circle and the hand of God. The circle is an ancient symbol for God and eternity while His hand is shown as shedding blessings on mankind. The cross is the symbol of faith, redemption and of our Savior. Baptism is symbolized by circles with wavy lines moving through them, a heraldic form of the fountain. The fountain symbolized living water, waters of regeneration and the fountain of salvation.

There is a sub-theme of the Trinity in the window. God the Father is symbolized by the large circle and the hand. God the Son is symbolized by the cross and fish shape. The fish is one of the oldest Christian symbols. The Holy Spirit is symbolized by the flame shapes in gold at the bottom of the window and by the bands that move up through the window at the left and right. These bands also stand for the power of the Holy Spirit and for God's grace which encompasses all mankind.
